A long, long time ago, the Yellow Emperor was a born talent. He was very good at words and had a great capacity for thought and knowledge. Through hard, diligent study, he finally became the Emperor of China. One day, the Yellow Emperor asked his royal family doctor who’s name was Qi Bo: “I have heard that people of ancient times had lived as long as over 100 years with no signs of weakening in movements, but people nowadays become weakened in their movements at the age of 50 years old. Is this because of the different in times or the way people lived?
Qi Bo answered: “The ancient people who knew the Dao, had a proper way to live. They followed the pattern of Yin and Yang, remained in harmony with numerical symbols, ate and drank with moderation and lived their daily life in a regular pattern with neither excess nor abuse. In this way, their spirits and bodies remained in perfect harmony with each other, they could live their natural life for over 100 years.”
“On the other hand, people now are quite different from then. They replace their water with alcohol; consider the wild-fantasy as normal; have sexual relations while intoxicated; exhaust pure energy through useless desires and waste true energy through mindlessness and carelessness. These resulted in failing to maintain their energy and guard their spirit constantly. These cause their hearts to go opposite from their happiness, and they live their daily life in an irregular pattern. This is the reason that they can only live half of their life span.”
Qi Bo continued: “The teachings of the Sages of ancient times on nurturing life was that one should avoid bad weather and unhealthy environments, living a quiet life without too many meaningless desires, so one can maintain his pure energy, and peaceful spirit, then disease cannot enter the body. Over the days and years, one can have a very calm heart, that is, having a peaceful mind without fear and working hard without fatigue. When the energy is flowing, one can obtain satisfaction of every need. Then, people would all be like: any food that available to them is delicious, any clothes that they wearing are beautiful. They love their culture, customs, and are pleased in the society with whatever class they belong to. These are truly simple and satisfied people. Moreover, their eyes are never attracted by overwhelmed luxuries; their mind won’t be fooled by untrue words; and their thoughts never focus on material gains or losses. Regardless if one is intelligent or dull, capable or unskilled, they retain their perfect virtue that won’t be influenced by the temptations of the surroundings. These are the reasons people can live long since they have never been exposed to dangers, and managed to retain the excellence of virtue principles. This is the Dao of life.”
